BELIZE TRIP

As I had mentioned earlier, we have been working on a measurement task in the classroom involving a series of projects to prep for our Scuba Diving Trip to Belize.

If you have been following us on Twitter @Take3Grade3 you would have watched some of the progression as we have prepared for our trip.

Last week, students had to measure their bodies for scuba gear (head circumference, shoulder width, shoe size and weight). Once they found their measurements they had to look at a chart to decide what size would be best for them. It’s a lot like shopping online and using the measurement chart.  A lot of great math discussion happened in the classroom, some students were tall enough to fit into a Junior XL however their weight was of a Junior M.  Students then had to reason as to what wetsuit they would need and why.

We then began to investigate our dive. Students were given a series of questions involving time, travel distances, and conversions.  For example: The dive boat departs at 8:00a.m.  The boat averages about 20 miles per hour.  The dive site is 30 miles from the coast.  How long will it take you to get the dive site?  What time will you arrive at the site?

Again, great math conversations.  I invited Ms. Smith to come down to our classroom to observe the math talks.  Students were able to identify what the problem was. They knew where to start with the math problem by applying what they already knew.  From that, they moved forward with the math problem.  I’ll attach some pictures of the strategies students used.

We also looked at the data collected from our dive.  We looked at a variety of previous dives and the number of sea animals observed (sea turtles, manatees, nurse sharks).  Students realized that the number of sea animals have been decreasing.  They explored the patterns of how they were decreasing and used this to predict and identify numbers for next year and the years to come.

Students were engaged, they wanted answers as to why the numbers were decreasing.  Using our devices we inquired about pollution in our oceans.  The students were shocked to find out about the effects of: oil, cruise boats, garbage, and sewage.

Today we are wrapping up the unit, and possibly looking at creating a report about pollution in our oceans for language.

One math project – has led to an amazing journey of math talks and inquiries.

DREAMBOX

I’m so proud of our grade 3’s!  They are working so hard on the DREAMBOX math program at home, completing many of the small assignments and long term assignments.  Every week I meet with each student to show them their dashboard of growth and to discuss any issues they are having with the math assignments.

This Friday, students should have completed the last assignment in Geometry.  Students have been measuring angles and sorting a variety of shapes based on line segments, angles and parallel lines.

Take a moment this week, and check out what your child has been doing on Dreambox.  If you could make sure they are spending 20minutes every night to complete their project due Friday.

If you have any questions, feel free to call me at school.

Some of the kids have asked if we could do a Valentine’s Day exchange. Yes, of course we will do a Valentine Celebration on Tuesday.
